Pattern hair loss is the most common type of hair loss and occurs to both men and women. When it occurs to males, it is known as male-pattern hair loss (MPHL) and female-pattern hair loss (FPHL) when it occurs to females.
Pattern hair loss is the type of hair loss that mostly affects the front and top of the scalp. The hair loss often occurs as a thinning hairline in males, while in females, it usually occurs as a thinning of the hair.
Male pattern hair loss is said to happen due to the male hormone dihydrotestosterone and genetics. However, the reason for female pattern hair loss is not clear. By the age of 50, pattern hair loss affects about half of males and a quarter of females.
Up to 95% of men undergoing the problem of hair loss with thinning hair is due to male pattern baldness only. The reason for it is the genes you get from your parents.
Scientists and researchers have said that the gene may affect how sensitive your hair follicles are to a hormone called DHT, which makes them contract. As they get smaller, the hair that grows back tends to be thinner, finer and shorter. Ultimately, it takes longer for hair to grow back. Then, the follicles will contract so that no hair grows at all.
Male pattern baldness shows up in a shape which is generally a receding hairline with thinning strands around the crown of your head. In due course, that area will go bald, but you’ll still have a certain pattern of hair above your ears spinning to the lower back of the head.
Men with this attribute can start to lose their hair as early as their early teens. In general, the earlier it begins, the greater the loss will be. Other types of hair loss are likely to happen faster than male pattern baldness.
Alopecia areata or spot baldness makes your hair fall out in round, smooth patches, but it generally grows back. The condition is a kind of autoimmune disease, which means your body attacks itself. It destroys your hair in this case. Scarring alopecia is a rare disease that destroys your hair follicles and makes scar tissue outline in their place. Hair will not grow back.

Female pattern hair loss creates a widening part and leads to overall thinning without treatment. However, not every woman who has this type of hair loss will develop complete thinning.
You may have female pattern hair loss (FPHL) if your ponytail is getting thinner these days- a condition that affects millions of women.
FPHL begins in midlife for most women when a woman is in her 40s, 50s, or 60s. It can begin earlier for some women.
