Piedra (Trichomycosis Nodularis) occurs when the hair fibers are infected by a fungus. The noticeable indicator of a piedra infection is the growth of hard nodules on hair fibers. The nodules are a concretion of hyphae and fruiting bodies of the fungus, called ascostroma, from which the fungal spores are released. The infection may affect body, genital areas and hairs of the scalp.

There are two basic types of Piedra, white piedra and black piedra, referring to the color of the nodules formed on the hair fiber. White piedra is due to Trichosporon beigelii and is found mostly in Europe and Southern parts of the USA while Black Piedra is due to the fungus Piedra iahortae and is mostly found in tropical countries.

Psoriasis

This infection may cause dry scales on the scalp, swollen scalp and hair loss that result from extreme scratching or pulling the scales off.

Alopecia areata

Alopecia areata can cause hair fall, besides causing scalp itchiness and tingling. This can result in circular patches of baldness. It occurs when the immune system attacks healthy hair follicles.
