WHAT IS DHT?
DHT or Dihydrotestosterone is a male hormone derived from testosterone, created when androgen comes in contact with an enzyme called 5-alpha-reductase (5-AR). DHT is claimed to be one of the vital cause of baldness & prostate problems in men & therefore termed as ‘bad hormone’.
KNOW THE FACTS:
In reality, DHT plays a very important role in the development of male characteristics in the womb & during puberty. In fact, DHT is the factor that’s responsible for body & facial hair growth, sexual functions in men. It also is an important androgen in the brain which helps in mood regulation.
RELATION BETWEEN DHT & BALDNESS:
High levels of DHT is seen as a primary cause of baldness/hair loss in men.
The high levels of this hormone block all nourishment to the hair follicles.
It shortens the growth phase that results in miniaturization of the follicles.
It shunts the growth of hair shaft leading to thinning of hair & baldness.
NEED OF DHT BLOCKERS:
The belief that DHT leads to baldness has promoted the theory that DHT blockers would help in saving the hair follicles from miniaturization & thus, baldness. Therefore, when people look for how to reduce hair fall they are advised to take blockers that inhibit the production of DHT.
PROS OF DHT BLOCKERS:
There are some hair loss drugs like Propecia, Avodart, etc. in the market that reduce the DHT levels considerably & as a result have been able to slow down baldness & hair loss in men.
CONS OF DHT BLOCKERS:
The pros of blockers are limited but the cons are plenty. The use of blockers has shown lots of side effects in men. The biggest being it stops hair growth all over the body, adversely impacts the libido, leads to sexual dysfunction and also results in loss of muscle tissue.
DHT possesses great antidepressant & anti-anxiety qualities therefore inhibiting it results in depression & high rate of anxiety.
BEST WAY OUT:
Researches, on how to reduce hair fall in men, have proven that DHT levels impact those who have some genetic sensitivity due to which their hair follicles react to it. So, in such people two things needs to be done- keep the DHT levels low in the scalp naturally & lower the sensitivity of follicles towards DHT.
1: NATURAL WAY OF REDUCING DHT:
1. Having a nutritious diet, rich in vitamins & proteins, leading to production of Sebum, Collagen, improving blood supply to the follicles & inhibiting DHT.
2. There are some natural blockers like Pumpkin seeds, Nuts, Carrot, Banana, etc. that may help in keeping the DHT levels low.
2: CONTROLLING DHT SENSITIVITY:
1. It has been seen that Alkaline ash inhibits DHT.
2. Controlling the allergens will result in lowering the sensitivity of the follicles towards DHT.
3. Detoxifying should be done as Toxins build up in the blood from time to time.
CONCLUSIVE WAY OUT:
The use of medications is not advised as they will lead to some very far reaching side-effects, adversely affecting your life. Natural ways of DHT blocking along with controlling the sensitivity will do the trick. Taking professional help to stimulate the follicles will also show positive results.
