What is Dandruff?

About 60% of the people have dandruff at some time in their lives. Dandruff is a condition of the scalp that causes flakes of skin to appear. It is often accompanied by itching. The causes of dandruff are not well-defined or understood. The condition occurs when the scalp is oily or dry skin.

Malassezia, a harmless fungus found on our scalp, along with the dead skin cells, which occur in the natural process, are supposed to be the reason behind dandruff formation.

Other reasons such as poor hair brushing habits or not shampooing as often as required, skin diseases or certain medical conditions or even improper diet, can trigger the growth of dandruff.

Dandruff is not a disease but rather a condition which causes irritation & unease. If it is not taken care of & the problem aggravates, then it may lead to skin problems which may lead to dandruff and will need a doctor’s attention.

dandruff make you go bald

Can Dandruff Make you go Bald?

Did you lose your hair around the time you noticed a notably hard case of dandruff? Or did you suddenly experience a dandruff problem some time after you began losing your hair? Is there a cause and effect relationship between hair loss and dandruff. The question ‘Can dandruff be responsible for hair loss?’ seems like a very logical question.

Logical Approach

Thousands are spent on shampoos to eliminate dandruff and for hair restoration . Though dandruff is eliminated, people may continue to lose their hair. This might suggest that there may not be a real relationship.

Scientific Approach

Seeking professional opinion seems like a reasonable solution for determining whether dandruff can cause hair loss or not. Doctors say that the relationship between dandruff and hair loss is indirect only.

The chain of events are as follows:-

  • People are prescribed medications to reduce hair loss.
  • Minoxidil contains alcohol which dries the scalp and can result in flaking.
  • Dry scalps and flaking tend to itch.
  • Intense itching usually induces vigorous scratching.
  • Vigorous scratching can separate the hair from one’s head.

Therefore, Scratching, not dandruff itself, is the principal relationship between hair loss and dandruff. Dandruff is about the skin condition on the scalp. Thinning hair is about a condition in the hair follicles.

It is a cosmetic disease which is not life threatening or contagious. However, it does make us all uncomfortable from the itchiness and falling bits which others can see long before we do.

Exception To The Rule

To be precise, there are some medical conditions which result in temporary hair loss. The harshest conditions are psoriasis and seborrheic dermatitis causing scaling similar to dandruff.

However, if what you believe is dandruff and itching becomes severe and spreads after you have used shampoos and other products, consult a doctor for a closer examination.

What is the Correlation Between Dandruff and Winters?

Winters aggravates the problem of dandruff as the cold winds & dryness saps the moisture & makes the scalp more prone to dryness. This also gives rise to itchiness on the scalp. The most frustrating factor is that they are stubborn and don’t leave you easily.

What are the ways for dandruff prevention?

  1. Regular Washing & Conditioning - Many a times, specially during winters we wash hair less frequently than in summers. This results in cleansing the scalp & maintaining the oil balance.A good anti-dandruff shampoo should be used at intervals to control its growth. Conditioning is very essential to keep your hair in a healthy condition.
  2. Brush/comb it two times a day - Combing or brushing the tresses at least two to three times during the day is beneficial as it removes the dandruff flakes and also stimulates blood circulation to the scalp.
  3. Periodical Oiling - Once a week oil massage will help in keeping the dandruff at bay. The selection of oil will depend on the quality and requirement of your hair.
  4. Try Grandma’s home remedies - Using ingredients easily available and known for their anti-bacterial & anti-fungal properties such as neem or tulsi leaves, or baking soda or vinegar- are tried and tested to provide relief from dandruff.
  5. Keep Stress under control - Stress is known to give rise to dandruff and eventually, leading to hair fall. To keep it at bay, you should adopt meditation or yoga or a moderate exercise regime.
  6. Adopt Balanced Diet - A balanced diet is the building block for healthy, luscious manes. Your diet should be rich in vitamins, zinc, iron, protein, etc. ensuring healthy scalp & follicles.
  7. Drink a lot of Fluids - It is mandatory to keep yourself well hydrated by the intake of lots of fluids. This will help to retain the moisture on the scalp & control dandruff production.

What are some Home Remedies for Dandruff Treatment?

If you have persistent itchiness, you have a dry scalp and it may also be accompanied by soreness, dandruff and hair loss. Dry scalp can have a number of different causes, like harsh hair products, change in weather or poor diet, but the good news is that you can treat it and hence treat dandruff.

Tea tree oil

tea oil

Tea tree oil is known to have strong moisturizing agents that can relieve dry scalp and its symptoms. This is the reason why many dandruff shampoos can be found to have tea tree oil in them.

  • Tea tree oil can be purchased as an essential oil from many drugstores, and you can also find shampoos that have tea tree oil as an active ingredient for people with dry scalp.
  • You can use one of these products, or mix a few drops of tea tree oil with coconut or olive oil, and massage it into your scalp. Let it sit for 10 minutes and then wash out your hair.

Baking soda and olive oil

Baking soda has antibacterial and antifungal properties, while olive oil is moisturizing. If you mix these two, it can exfoliate your scalp well.

  • The baking soda and olive oil combination is a good choice if you have dandruff along with dry scalp, as the exfoliation, moisture, and antifungal properties combined can treat the scratchy white flakes.
  • Mix baking soda and olive oil together in equal parts and massage into your scalp carefully. Let it sit for five minutes and then wash your hair well using shampoo and conditioner.

I am honestly thankful to Advanced Hair Studios. I suffer from a hair-pulling disorder. There is this constant urge to pull off your hair follicles. It is painless when you pull but extremely painful when you see a missing patch on your scalp. But, I feel blessed with AHS hair fall treatment. I can see baby hair growing. It’s been two weeks. All I can see is low hair fall.

I have done my hair transplant surgery in AHS Delhi Branch on 2019 by travelling to Delhi from Dhaka, Bangladesh. The front and the back portion of my head were bald and through the hair transplant surgery, they have managed to cover the front portion of my head and the former appearance of my face returned back. The way they collected hairs from the donor portion did not affect my donor area at all. I am quite happy with my result. I have been consulting with them for a second seating so that they can cover the back portion of my head as well so that the hair density on top will increase and the bald portion of my head will reduce to a minimum level.
