Can Heavy Drinking Be the Reason for Your Hair to Fall?

Alcoholism and excessive alcohol use can have adverse effects on your life, your health, and even your appearance. Such is the connection between alcohol and hair loss. Let’s find out what happens to our body when you start taking excessive alcohol.

Dehydration

Alcohol, when consumed in excessive amount can cause accelerated dehydration. The natural level of anti-diuretic hormone (ADH) reduces in the body after alcohol consumption. ADH helps the body regulate hydration, so when these levels reduces, the body starts to drive out liquid through sweating and urinating. Alcohol can make existing hair follicles very dry and brittle due to dehydration, which makes them more likely to fall out. Dehydration can also cause dandruff.

Vitamin Depletion

Alcohol consumption is also linked with a decrease in vitamin levels, especially vitamin A and C. Both vitamins play a major role in keeping the body healthy, so hair health can suffer when these vitamin stores are exhausted.

Loss of Minerals

Iron and Zinc are two major minerals for healthy hair, so the reduction of these two minerals can arise due to excessive alcohol consumption.

An important mineral for the overall health of the hair is zinc. It also helps the whole body to absorb key nutrients. Alcohol prevents zinc from being absorbed appropriately, and affects the whole body including hair as it really needs to be absorbed daily.

Iron is again, a major mineral for the health of your hair and an iron deficiency can result in baldness. This causes hair to enter the resting stage of the growth cycle prematurely. The hairs then lie resting for 90 days until shedding. If the loss of minerals doesn’t get controlled, the hairs can continue in the resting stage and will result in rigorous hair loss. If, though, your intake of minerals is regulated, the hair will return to its normal growth on its own within around 6 months.

There are some other ways as well by which alcohol can lead to hair loss:

  1. Alcohol causes blood sugar spikes, which is connected to pattern baldness.
  2. When you drink excessively you tend to fall asleep for extra hours, which is not healthy sleep. When you don’t sleep well, it can increase stress, and stress is linked to hair loss. In fact, there is a stress-induced hair loss condition called telogen effluvium or TE. During this condition, your hair follicles don’t stock up themselves as they should, but they still continue peeling
  3. Alcohol use is also related to increased levels of estrogen. Increased estrogen, mainly in men, can cause problems with hair growth and can result in hair loss

Conclusion

If you are experiencing an increased rate of hair shedding or areas of hair loss, contact your hair expert and doctor. Heavy drinking and related conditions or lifestyle factors does have an adverse impact on your hair and skin.

I am honestly thankful to Advanced Hair Studios. I suffer from a hair-pulling disorder. There is this constant urge to pull off your hair follicles. It is painless when you pull but extremely painful when you see a missing patch on your scalp. But, I feel blessed with AHS hair fall treatment. I can see baby hair growing. It’s been two weeks. All I can see is low hair fall.

I have done my hair transplant surgery in AHS Delhi Branch on 2019 by travelling to Delhi from Dhaka, Bangladesh. The front and the back portion of my head were bald and through the hair transplant surgery, they have managed to cover the front portion of my head and the former appearance of my face returned back. The way they collected hairs from the donor portion did not affect my donor area at all. I am quite happy with my result. I have been consulting with them for a second seating so that they can cover the back portion of my head as well so that the hair density on top will increase and the bald portion of my head will reduce to a minimum level.
