Can Pilates be Helpful in Hair Growth?

What is pilates?

Pilates is a physical fitness system which improves flexibility, posture, core strength, coordination and enhances mental awareness. In early 20th century it was developed by Joseph Pilates, a physical trainer. Pilates uses controlled movements performed on mat with specifically designed apparatuses.

Can pilates be helpful in hair growth?

If you are looking at it directly working as a hair loss treatment, then it is not! There is no conclusive evidence favoring Pilates are a miracle cure for hair loss. Practicing Pilates does not ensure that you will not go bald or it will lead to hair regrowth. But like many other natural hair treatment options, Pilates also help in improving the scalp environment which eventually leads to better hair health.

How can pilates be helpful in hair growth?

#1. Practicing Pilates is Known to Improve Blood Circulation:

Circulation of blood to the scalp is a key factor that influences the health of the follicles. Through this system the nutrients reach the follicles and if it slows down it would lead to hampering the growth and at worse, result in miniaturization. A regular practice of Pilates results in increased blood flow throughout the body including the scalp.

#2. It Enhances Oxygen Intake:

Another key element for the healthy growth of strands, which many of us take for granted, is oxygen intake. Somewhat like Yoga, the focal point of Pilates is breath control and meditative breathing. The concentration and stress on breath retention, as well as other breathing patterns, help in improving oxygen levels. Low oxygen level has been proven to increase the DHT levels which is a major influencing factor in baldness. In contrast, high oxygen level produces Estradiol; an estrogen steroid, that promotes hair growth.

#3. It Reduces Stress Levels:

A very high percentage of the people today is affected by stress and are incapable of curbing it. It is a known fact that chronic stress is a major cause of hair fall. Various studies have proved that practices like Pilates and other physical exercises help in reducing the stress levels.

#4. It Brings Flexibility And Improves Posture:

The main focus of Pilates is to enhance the core strength and increase flexibility. It also focuses on improvement of posture that reduces stress in all the major parts. It assists in reducing scalp tension that helps in boosting blood flow to the balding or thinning areas: leading to healthy hair growth.

Conclusion:

The question is can Pilates be recommended as a hair fall treatment or a hair loss solution? Will it solve all issues related to hair? Will it help regrow hair and overcome baldness?

Certainly not!

Pilates do benefit the general health of the body and in the process ensure a conducive environment for the health and growth of the hair. It can be taken up as a lifestyle improvement which will tone the body and boost mental health.
