Many of us have often been embarrassed by the white flaky skin deposits that can be seen on our scalp and shoulders. We often try out various kinds of ointments, shampoos and conditioners that give us only temporary relief.

Understanding the scientific reason behind dandruff and what can be done to get rid of it will only help us to counter the problem better. Here, we shall look at some easy tips to get rid of dandruff and what can be done to prevent it. But first, what is dandruff?

What is Dandruff?

Dandruff is a skin condition that affects the scalp region. Symptoms of dandruff include flaking of the skin, an itchy scalp, irritation and redness. A relatively harmless condition, dandruff, in some extreme cases may cause inflammation.

This condition is known as Seborrheic dermatitis. Dandruff affects a large portion of the human population. One estimate suggests that it affects at least half of the adult male population. It usually starts with the onset of puberty and the severity is reduced after the age of fifty.

10 Easy Tips to Get Rid of Dandruff

  1. Apply tea tree oil on the scalp as an effective remedy for dandruff. Tea tree oil is said to have anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory properties, which may help in alleviating the symptoms of dandruff. The oil can be applied in various forms – shampoo, serum or conditioner.

One study shows that tea tree oil is effective in fighting against one particular form of fungus that can cause both Seborrheic dermatitis as well as dandruff. It is recommended to apply tea tree oil liberally on your scalp before washing your hair normally with water.

  2. Incorporate coconut oil in your hair care regimen. Coconut oil has multiple health benefits and is also considered an effective remedy for dandruff. Coconut oil helps in skin hydration that prevents the skin of the scalp from getting dry and flaky.

For best results, apply coconut oil at night and rinse your hair in the morning to get rid of excess oil. You can also add a few drops of lemon juice in coconut oil for better results. Regular usage can remove dead skin cells from the scalp.

  3. Apply Aloe Vera gel on hair strands. Aloe Vera gel is used in a large number of skin and hair care products for its soothing properties. But Aloe Vera gel can be used to treat dandruff as well. Apply the gel liberally on your hair strands at night and wash it off in the morning. Regular usage can reduce dandruff in a couple of weeks.

  4. Include apple cider vinegar in your hair routine. Apple cider vinegar is made from fermenting apples in a way that enhances its acids, mineral content and live cultures.

Apple cider vinegar has anti-fungal, antibacterial and disinfectant properties that are effective in treating dandruff. It restores the pH balance of the scalp, removes dead skin cells and reduces the fungal growth on your scalp and hair.

  5. Use anti dandruff shampoos regularly. While there are effective natural remedies to get rid of dandruff, you must take care of your hair regularly. An easy way to keep dandruff at bay is to use a natural anti dandruff shampoo.

Such shampoos have anti-dandruff properties that remove white flakes from the scalp, moisturize the hair strands and prevent dandruff from returning. Follow it up with a nourishing conditioner for best results.

  6. Salicylic acid is a beta hydroxy acid, which is well-known for reducing acne and exfoliating the skin. It removes dead skin cells from the scalp and is, therefore, considered an effective remedy to get rid of dandruff.

Apply salicylic acid to your hair by mixing with a hair care serum and leave your hair to rest for the night. Do remember washing your hair in the morning so that there are no remnants. You should be able to see the difference within a few weeks.

  7. Baking soda can also be used to treat dandruff. To remove dead skin cells from your body, rub baking soda in your scalp area and leave it for a couple of minutes. This should be done on damp hair for the soda to effectively do its job. You can wash your hair strands normally afterward to remove all traces of baking soda.

  8. Lemon juice is another effective remedy for dandruff. The acids in the lemon will reduce the oiliness of the scalp, while also removing the dead skin cells. Apply two tablespoons of lemon juice and massage well on the scalp for a few minutes. Afterwards, wash your hair as usual.

  9. Fenugreek seeds have magical properties when it comes to reducing dandruff and improving the overall quality of hair. To apply, take roughly 100 grams of fenugreek seeds and mash them to a paste and then apply it on your hair. Keep the pack for more than an hour before shampooing and conditioning your hair.

  10. Finally, curd, especially home-made curd, is one of the best natural remedies when it comes to nourishing dry skin, which will also stop the flaking of skin. Dandruff particularly occurs on dry scalp and applying curd is an effective remedy against it.

Conclusion

From applying lemon juice to incorporating coconut oil in a hair care regimen – there are plenty of tips to get rid of dandruff. These natural remedies are effective in not just treating dandruff but also making your hair naturally healthy and shiny.

I am honestly thankful to Advanced Hair Studios. I suffer from a hair-pulling disorder. There is this constant urge to pull off your hair follicles. It is painless when you pull but extremely painful when you see a missing patch on your scalp. But, I feel blessed with AHS hair fall treatment. I can see baby hair growing. It’s been two weeks. All I can see is low hair fall.

I have done my hair transplant surgery in AHS Delhi Branch on 2019 by travelling to Delhi from Dhaka, Bangladesh. The front and the back portion of my head were bald and through the hair transplant surgery, they have managed to cover the front portion of my head and the former appearance of my face returned back. The way they collected hairs from the donor portion did not affect my donor area at all. I am quite happy with my result. I have been consulting with them for a second seating so that they can cover the back portion of my head as well so that the hair density on top will increase and the bald portion of my head will reduce to a minimum level.
