While some itching may go away on its own, there are a few others that may require proper hair treatment.

In this blog, we take a look at the seven major reasons for an itchy scalp. Some of the causes of an itchy scalp can lead to seriously adverse effects if leftu ntreated and unanswered. The major causes of hair itching, however, can easily be treated. As such, there is no reason to worry unless you find the right answers to your problem at hand.

What is an Itchy Scalp?

Itchy scalp is a medical condition that causes the scalp to itch. Largely, it occurs because of inflammatory reactions, skin diseases and dandruff.

7 Causes Why You May Suffer from an Itchy Scalp

1. Dandruff

Dandruff is caused by a dry and itchy scalp and you may find flakes of skin all over your clothes. It is one of the most common causes of your hair itching. However, we as humans have a wide variety of medical and home remedies to treat dandruff easily and safely.

From shampoo to hair oil, treatments for dandruff are many and most of them are easily accessible. For example, using oil with lemon juice can also help in getting rid of dandruff and preventing it from coming back.

2. Reaction to a Hair Care Product

Sometimes products like shampoos and hair dyes can have allergic skin reactions leading to an itchy, dry, and flaky scalp. With regard to hair dyes, often the culprit is an ingredient in the dye called para-phenylenediamine (PPD), which is mostly found in black hair dyes.

Some shampoos can also irritate the scalp. Thus you need to do a better job of rinsing the shampoo from your hair. You could also have an allergy to a conditioner, or any other product that touches your scalp. If that’s the case, you’ll likely have an itchy rash on your scalp and any other skin that the product touches. One way of safeguarding yourself is to do a possible patch test on sensitive areas of your skin and see if there is any allergic reaction from the product you are about to use. To get rid of the itch, you need to stop using the product that’s causing the reaction.

3. Lice

Head lice and their tiny eggs, called nits, can often be found at the roots of the hair strands. You may get lice from someone who is already harboring lice. Being one of the common reasons for hair itching, head lice can be nasty and cause damage to your body.

Once discovered, you must get rid of lice and their eggs. Take an anti-lice shampoo and try to gently massage your scalp. Then wash thoroughly and comb your hair strands carefully. The shampoo will kill the lice while combing the hair carefully will help remove them from your scalp.

4. Seborrheic Dermatitis

One of the most common itchy scalp causes is Seborrheic Dermatitis. Red skin, scaly patches, dandruff and itchiness are some of the main symptoms of this disease. Scientists are still unaware as to why this disease occurs. But it may be due to a yeast infection or due to the presence of yeast near the oil secreting glands of the skin.

Poor personal hygiene may aggravate the situation. If you are suffering from this condition, you need to take care of your skin. Prevent it from being dry by using a deep moisturizing shampoo. Try to keep your scalp clean to avoid dirt clogging up the pores of the scalp.

5. Hives

Hives are raised, red, itchy bumps that can appear on their own and may go away even without medication. Usually, they are a reaction to certain food or allergens. Hives primarily cause itching but may also sting.

6. Scalp Ringworm

Another reason for the scalp itching is Scalp Ringworm. It is a highly infectious fungal infection that can spread among toddlers quite easily. Scaly patches can occur all over the scalp accompanied by severe itching. The doctor may suggest oral medication along with the shampoo.

7. Psoriasis

Psoriasis is a skin disorder in which skin cells multiply up to 10 times faster than normal. This leads the skin to build into bumpy red patches covered with white scales. They mostly appear on the scalp, elbows, knees, and lower back and can cause itching. You must consult a doctor for proper diagnosis. There are various treatments available.

I am honestly thankful to Advanced Hair Studios. I suffer from a hair-pulling disorder. There is this constant urge to pull off your hair follicles. It is painless when you pull but extremely painful when you see a missing patch on your scalp. But, I feel blessed with AHS hair fall treatment. I can see baby hair growing. It’s been two weeks. All I can see is low hair fall.

I have done my hair transplant surgery in AHS Delhi Branch on 2019 by travelling to Delhi from Dhaka, Bangladesh. The front and the back portion of my head were bald and through the hair transplant surgery, they have managed to cover the front portion of my head and the former appearance of my face returned back. The way they collected hairs from the donor portion did not affect my donor area at all. I am quite happy with my result. I have been consulting with them for a second seating so that they can cover the back portion of my head as well so that the hair density on top will increase and the bald portion of my head will reduce to a minimum level.
